How To Care For A Bordoodle

1. Diet and Nutrition

As a relatively active dog, this breed needs a certain diet to keep them fit. While it may not be largely different from other breeds, there are some foods they do better with.

  • Vet-approved pet food
  • Meat, e.g., beef, turkey, lamb, chicken, fish, etc
  • Bones
  • Eggs
  • Rice (in moderation)
  • Supplements e .g glucosamine
  • Water
  • Vegetables, e. g carrots, broccoli, celery, spinach, peas, green beans, etc.
  • Fruit, e. g apples, bananas, cantaloupe, strawberries, pineapple, watermelons, grapes, etc.

A puppy should be fed thrice a day, while an adult can do 2 meals a day. Experts recommend having set feeding times for puppies and taking away uneaten food after 15 minutes or more to prevent food aggression in the future and wastage.

2. Physical Exercise

To help keep this breed healthy, it is important to give them daily walks. You should provide 45 minutes, as well as give them games to help mentally stimulate them. Experts would also advise you to fill your time with obedience training which will come in handy in the future. If you live in an apartment, this dog can adjust as long as they get sufficient exercise. Failure to do so can lead to destructive behavior, so it is important to establish a routine.

3. Grooming and Hygiene

Before seeking a bordoodle for sale near me, you should know about their hygiene since dogs can smell bad if not properly cared for. Thanks to their poodle DNA, this breed sheds minimally, so they are considered hypoallergenic. Despite this, you still need to brush your coat twice or thrice a week to prevent matting and collection of dirt. This is important, especially if the dog is playing outside in the dirt.

Regular baths are not recommended, but it is necessary to clip their nails and brush their teeth daily if you are able to do so. Most pet owners are not aware, but pets can also suffer from dental diseases; hence proper hygiene is necessary to prevent this from happening

4. Common Allergies

Your pup may react negatively when exposed to substances like chocolate, dust mites, flea saliva, pollen, certain household chemicals, specific medications, gluten, corn, alcohol, cooked bones, macadamia nuts, xylitol, onions, garlic, or chives.

These allergies may manifest in the form of itching, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, shedding, and many other symptoms. If you observe this in your pet, be sure to get them to the vet for immediate assistance, as some substances listed here are toxic and could cause death.

5. Potential Health Risks

Common health problems that the bordoodle may face include :

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Epilepsy
  • Progressive retinal atrophy
  • Obesity
  • Addison’s disease
  • Gastric dilation volvulus
  • Cancer
  • Collie eye anomaly
  • Seizures
  • Hypothyroidism

To reduce the likelihood of these diseases occurring, it is important to help your pet live a healthy lifestyle and provide vaccinations if available. Bordoodles receive vaccinations from around 7 weeks for diseases like distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, rabies, parvovirus, kennel cough, Bordetella, and more, depending on your vet's recommendations.
